Creatip Art – Plexi Ramps0

June 15, 2011 by MartinB. | 6:25 am

Marcus Sudjojo finished his second projekt – the plexi ramps! He sent me the infos about this project yesterday, have fun:

After my first project, the plexi-deck, what else to do, if not plexi-ramps and plexi-obstacles

Now after my post on how to make plexi-deck, some of my friends criticize me for ‘encouraging the use of dangerous power tools’, and I thought, they got a point. So now I won’t post on how to use power tools. If you really want to make them, you can google on how to cut, shape, and glue acrylic/plexiglass.

First, I will post the showcase for my project (pictures of my plexi-ramps and plexi-obstacles). After that, I will post things you’d need to make them….

Oh, and I’m not a handyman who’s used to work with plexiglass, so my project is a little rough. Any profesional handyman can do better job than me, of course.

So here we go:

1. Showcase

The nice thing about plexi-ramps and obstacles is that you can put various small things under them, fingerboard, model car, lego, etc

What’s that? Kinda boring you say? Well, let’s turn off the room lights shall we?

I’ve made 6 items, which are:

2 kickers

1 (supposed to be) pallet. It doesn’t look very convincing because it’s too thin (I used 3mm thick plexiglass)

Kickers and pallet altogether

Garden table

Polebank

Pyramid Rail

Manual Box/Pad

Next, some freeze action:

Now, I like freeze action, and I also like light-painting. I wonder if the two of them goes well together….

*the tricks were actually failed and crashed, lol….

What? You’re yawning already? Ok then, let’s kick it up a notch….TRON style!!!

And while we’re playing in the dark, let’s go glow…

Well, that’s it for now. If I have more pictures, I’ll post them again….

Be sure to check the section after this one on the things I used for this project

2. Things I used

As I said earlier, I won’t be posting anything on using power tools…

Ok, to make this project, this is what I used:

– First of all, designs for the project. I just scribbled them on a piece of paper. This is very important. Never start a project like this without designs, or you’ll burn your brain out and end up with junks….

Use your imagination to draw and calculate the parts used in a specific object. It really helps a lot if you already have ramps and obstacles, and you’re just making the plexiglass version of them. Just use the measurement of the real ramps and obstacles.

– Plexiglass (of course). I used 3mm thick. Thicker would be better, but much harder to work on (cutting, bending, etc)

– Tools and power tools. I used them to cut, sand (the edges), shape and bend.

– Plexiglass glue. Now you can go with emulsion type like epoxy and such (be sure to use acrylic/plastic specific type of glue), or like me, I used liquid type, acetone (paint and nail polish remover). Acetone gives more appealing result, but are harder to use

That’s all for making the plexi-ramps and plexi-obstacles.

Now for the novelties:

– Small things to put under the ramps and obstacles. The purpose is to add more colors, and to point out the transparency of the ramps and obstacles. As you can see above, I used miniature construction cone, miniature wheel, fingerboards, and even Wall-E

– Glow-in-the-dark stickers. I cut and stick them under one of my deck to make it glow. For best result, ‘full-charge’ it before you take a picture or use it to play. Good quality stickers can glow up to 1 hour from full charge. Also as you can see from the ‘glow’ picture from the section above, I also wear a glow-in-the-dark T-shirt to match the deck

– UV tube lamp. Also known as ‘black light’. When UV light hit the glow-in-the-dark sticker, it will glow like crazy, as you can see in the picture. Notice also that UV light will cause white surface to light too (the transparant tape on the right)

– Glow wire. At least that’s what it’s called here in my country. It’s basically a transparant rubber tube with electrical wire and glowing element inside, usually used in PC, sound system, and car modification. Here’s one website that I googled: www.glowire.com/ You might be able to get them at your local car modification workshops.

– Transparent tape to tape the glow wire to the ramps and obstacles. It’s not very neat and left glue residues on the plexi, but it’s much easier to use and less destructive than a transparent glue (i.e. power glue),

– Colorful LED. Strap two to your index and middle finger (one each, of course) to do the light painting

– Patient, and lots and lots of it…. I got frustrated numerous times while working on this project. In the end, it was worthed, at least for me….

Well, AWESOME and really creative projekt! THX again to Marcus Sudjojo!! keep up those things!
