Product Blog: Fingerboard-Molds – Custom Mold

May 13, 2017 by MartinB. | 3:03 pm

Last week I´ve received a package from Dennis. Dennis lives in Deggendorf in Germany and he is the owner of the brand Fingerboard-Molds. I´m in contact with him for some couple weeks now and he offered me to create my very own custom fingerboard mold. So I said yes and started my configuration with help of the fingerboard-custom-mold-configurator on his website:

I´ve never made a fingerboard mold before and I was never into making decks at all. The Custom-Mold-Configurator let me type in the size, wheelsbase, length, angles etc. and creates a deck/shape based on what I´m typing in. You get a direct preview with every step you do. Two different board styles are available (classic- or oldschool). I haven´t seen such a really cool tool before! So I sent Dennis my config and some days later I´ve received a package from Bavaria. In the package the first ever mold I did:

The package contains some more stuff than just the mold. Normally you get your custom mold, a set of screws, veneer for 3 boards, wood glue, the instruction, a boardgraphic (example) and three sheets of tape. And because I´m a lucky mofo I got even some more goodies in my package. Dennis send me a deck he made with my shape, some extra wood, a addon kit and the sanding/shaping help. Check out the whole box:

So now lets talk about the shape. The mold looks like this:

This mold is engineered for advanced and professional users. Its is made of is a combination of plastic-material and metal. The shells between which the wood is pressed is made from plastic for a perfect surface. For the best possible stiffness the bottom and the top is made from metal. If you like to have the contour of the deck on the mold this is now problem at all. Usually its just as difficult to drill the holes in the board symmetrically and with the right distance to each other. Because of that the mold can be used as drill pattern. Before demolding the wood, use the 8 pilot holes in the mold to drill the holes for the trucks with as much precision as possible.

And if you´re some kind of worried about creating your own shape, Dennis offers a standard shape too.

Such a mold is some kind of surreal to watch so lets have a look at the final deck:

Dennis made ths deck for me with my mold shape. I´m really happy with it because a made it flat and wide as I like my decks. But don´t judge the mold on this shape, as I said, YOU can create the shape YOU like. This is just mine.

Another cool item I´ve received is the extra template as a shaping help:

This additional template is available for you if you´ve bought you own mold before. It really helps you sanding you deck. And if you need some more help creating your deck there is a instruction paper available on the site.

So lets talk about the facts:

You can buy a standard or custom mold right overe here at the fingerboard-molds website: Click!
The custom mold (without the extra extra extra I´ve got) is about 100 Euro. You can get it right here: Click!
But as I told you before, there are more extras and standard molds available too. Check the full product lineup right over here: Click!
Btw fingerboard-molds is on instagram too: @fingerboardmolds

Please think about something. Even if you got a great mold like this, it´s still not easy to create a great fingerboard brand. A good fingerboard needs years and years of practice!

THX a lot Dennis for the great chance to create my own mold!!!!
