Jérôme Verony Interview0

December 17, 2011 by MartinB. | 9:24 am

Hello JV! Tell us about who you are, where you from and whats your daily business.

My name is Jérôme Verony, I was born and raised in Luxembourg but over the past 4 years I’ve been living in France and China because of my studies. Besides being a student, I’ve been running Substance Wheels (www.substancewheels.com) for about 6 years now!

How do you get in touch with fingerboarding?

My first contact with fingerboarding was through a TechDeck my dad purchased for me in a sports shop (that must have been about eleven years ago). I still remember being impressed by the level of detail of the setup but at that point, it wasn’t much more than a toy to me. A couple of years later, my view on fingerboarding changed when I got in touch with “professional” fingerboarding through a friend in junior high, who was tuned in to the German fingerboard scene that had just started emerging a couple of years earlier. I got to try many different brands of “homemade” brands from Germany and the US, such as Heart Attack Decks, the very first Shortwoods, Epidemic Wheels and also the first Winkler Wheels. Note that except for Winkler Wheels, none of these brands still exist today. Upon trying all this equipment my curiosity was stoked and I definitely wanted to get a nice setup myself. However, it was extremely difficult for me to obtain any decent hardware; there was only one local skateshop that carried anything besides Tech Deck but even they hardly ever had riptape or Berlin Woods on stock. Besides, I didn’t even like the Berlinwoods of that time, skinny and soggy as they were (a lot has changed within a decade!). Since I didn’t get much Internet access at that time, I had no contact with the online scene for a long while either. So I started to make my own hardware, first decks and a couple of years later, wheels.
“The rest is history”, as they say…

Whats your current setup?

I’m currently riding a Flaked Medium Shape with wide Blackriver-Trucks and the brand new Substance Aqua Flow Wheels.

What is your favorite trick?

Inward Heelflip.

Do you have any favorite rider or a video that influenced you?

Back in the days, I was a big fan of Eric Smith’s videos (check out this video for instance: http://youtu.be/i2wlckigZ0I). Today, there’s just an abundance of excellent riders and I’d have a hard time singling anyone out.

Which fingerboard experience you liked the most (contest/jam/session)?

That would be the Wikingercup I attended a couple of years ago, for its laid-back atmosphere. Fast Fingers is a great experience too but I was only able to attend once due to the unfortunate timing of the event. I’ve also had some good times in Spain although Barcelona can be unbearably hot in summer. Last but not least, my stay in Jakarta at the beginning of this year was very memorable and I’m looking forward to meeting the Indonesian scene again in January 2012!

And finally do you want to thank someone?

I’d like to thank all the people who’ve made it possible for fingerboarding to develop the way it has, I’d like to thank my team and everyone who supports Substance. I’d certainly also like to thank my dad for teaching me the basics of craftsmanship, my mom for being supportive at all times and my girlfriend for enriching my life considerably!

And thanks for the interview, Martin!

THX JV!
