Product Blog: Freak Decks – Sapphire

April 4, 2019 by MartinB. | 8:41 am

Spain! It´s been a while! Long time I´ve not received fingerboard stuff from Spain. The last packages from Spain were sent by Slam Concretes and South Soft bushings. Haven´t heard something from these companies for a while know !? and the product blogs I did were made in 2017 and 2016. So yes, it´s been a while that I´ve received fingerboard stuff from Spain. Maybe one reason for this is because the huge super super ultimate boom in Europe is over. Many companies closed their doors. Even Fingercan closed the website and is only on Instagram now. Thats sad but maybe there will be better days in future. The core will stay – hopefully!

I´m happy to have a “new” company right here with me. Freak Decks are made by Adrian Darrosa from Spain. Adrian founded the company in 2016 – I consider this as “new” – and offers handmade fingerboards from Spain. Everything on Freak Decks is made by Adrian by hand. So let´s have a look at some Sapphire fingerboard deck in some ultimate color:

Freak Decks - Sapphire

The Sapphire is one of the four most important gemstones in the world. It is the stone that represents wisdom and truth. In ancient times it was believed that the sky was blue because it was a reflection of the sapphires that were on earth.

Shape:

The deck is overall about 34mm wide. Nose and tail have the classic popsicle shape. The shape is overall medium (concave and kicks). Classic and up to date.

Let´s talk about this deck.

The “Sapphire” graphic is one graphic of a three precious stones series called “HUMILITY WISDOM & LOVE”. Adrian asked me on Instagram which one I want and I took this one, because I´m just a fan of this solid blue color. As you can see on the pictures, this color is more than solid. It´s fresh and clean like the blue sky at the beach. The graphic looks like a super thin foil on the deck, but I think it´s printed on paper. So this is not a real wear deck. In my opinion that doesn´t matter, because even the printed graphics won´t last forever and look wasted after heavy using. Many companies like Y for example still use this technique.

The shape. This deck is overall about 34mm wide. Nose and tail have the classic popsicle shape. The shape is overall medium (concave and kicks). It´s just classic and up to date. I think on some of the images the deck looks a bit thicker than other ones. Well, thats not true. The deck is normal thin. Maybe the reason for this is, that the edges are not as round as on other decks. So don´t worry about this, everything is fine with the thickness of this deck. It´s just like some decks look more anorexic than others :-D

The holes on this one look clean and symetric. The countersinks are shape like the head of your mounting screws. The sanding job is fine, as I said these are not the roundest/anorexic edges I´ve ever seen, but maybe this is just because I had these LAFB decks in my hands for the last couple of days. So these edges are standard sanded like on many other companies too. To be honest, before I had these LAFB decks, I never thought that the edges of a deck make such a difference. Don´t get me wrong, while using you won´t feel the difference. It´s just on macro pictures. These edges are clean and solid!
